Overview
Scanners that never drop
Harborline runs a busy regional distribution shed: forklifts, handheld scanners, label printers and a dock door that never closes. Their consumer-grade APs left dead aisles, so pickers memorised where to stand still and rescan.
We designed industrial coverage for the whole envelope — racking aisles, marshalling, offices and the yard — with rugged APs and roaming tuned for devices moving at forklift speed.
Challenge
Steel, height and motion
Twelve-metre racking full of shifting stock behaves like a moving RF maze, and scanners roam ten times faster than office laptops. High-mounted APs had to punch through metal while handing off cleanly — all without stopping the day shift.
Approach
Built for the forklift
- 01 — Active survey with a lift: real measurements at rack height, not guesses from the floor.
- 02 — Directional antennas down the long aisles; omnis over marshalling and docks.
- 03 — Roaming thresholds tuned for scanners, with a dedicated low-latency SSID.
- 04 — Weekend cutover aisle by aisle; Monday shift started on the new network.
Outcome
Pickers stopped memorising dead spots
Full-envelope coverage
Aisles, docks, offices and yard verified with post-install measurements.
Scanner-grade roaming
Handoffs tuned for fast-moving devices; rescans became rare.
Office network separated
Admin staff and warehouse systems segmented for security and priority.
